Beloved, I bring you Calvary greetings in the name of the lord.

Very expressly I would like us to understand what THANKSGIVING means.

According to the dictionary, it originally means to give thanks to GOD for harvest and for health.

Another dictionary has it that, it connotes a public holiday in the US (on the fourth Thursday in November) and in Canada (on the second Monday in October originally to give thanks to God for harvest and for health.

Whenever you give your thanksgiving and praises to the lord the way the bible instructs, you command supernatural authority over any issue you are facing.

However biblical thanksgiving is not just the worldly holiday tradition or a mere religious activity, rather it is a daily spiritual tool to free you from stress, pressure, lack, spiritual attack, bondage, marital and health challenges while God will get personally involved on your behalf.

When you are grateful to God and you show gratitude to God by being thankful to him.Powerful supernatural forces from heaven are unleashed that cause things to work like magic.

Consider this scenario, Mr. A, a tenant at No 6, six street, Lagos has 3 co tenants at his residence namely Mr. B, Mr. C and Mr. D, all of whom are fathers. WHY MUST WE GIVE GOD THANKS

1.     It is pleasing to God(It is his will for us to give thanks to him in every situation)(1^st Thessalonians 5:18)

2.     Faith and thanksgiving work together (When Jesus healed the ten lepers, only one of them came back and thankedhim. Jesus told the man, his faith had made him whole) Remember without faith it is impossible to please God.(Luke 17 13:19)

3.     Avoid Curses(In the old testament ,God cursed those who would not glorify him with a thankful heart)(Malachi 2 1:2)

4.     Blessings of multiplication(Jesus gave thanks before he fed the multitudes, there were plenty of food left over)(John 6 11:14)

5.     Deliverance and Spiritual Power(When he raised Lazarus from the dead, he began by thanking God for always hearing him)(John 11 41:42)

6.     Heaven’s Attention (When you give God praises and thanks, he always shows up that’s the truth. When peter and john were released after been arrested and warned not to preach the gospel, they lifted their voices to God and praised him. After that, the place was shaken, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke boldly. Acts 4 24:31)

When Paul and Silas were in prison,they sang and praised him, suddenly an earthquake shook the prison, the cell doors were open and their bonds were loosed. (Acts 16 25:26)

7.     God loves to be praised (He promises that when we praise him and thank him ,he would answer us before we call him, he would hear while we are still speaking)

8.     It’s the only thing he cannot do for himself; hitherto anyone who does it for him attracts generational blessings. Have you ever seen anyone that ever said thank me? It is way of showing gratitude when a hand of favour is offered.

9.     It is an instruction to praise him, if we do, he promises to bless us (psalm 67 5:6)

Many Christians today are grounded because they take praises and thanksgiving for granted. They do not know how to be thankful.

Remember ignorance is no excuse in law.

When the law of life is broken, there is no excuse.

They are his people, yes but they are suffering because they do not know what they need to know, while some know it but they do not practice it.

Remember anyone you do a favour to, and does not know how to show gratitude and appreciation, you are constrained on doing another favour to him/her. It’s only normal.

Thank you qualifies you for the next line of favour.

Consider this,when you pray, you give him a job to do ,when you fast, you give him a powerful work to do for you, but when you exalt and praise  his name and thank him , you are not asking him for anything, he does everything for you naturally.

Your degree of gratitude determines your altitude in life.

Gratitude determines your level of greatness in life.

The more grateful you are, the more colourful your destiny would be (Mark 6 21:26)

Thanksgiving is the currency of destiny.

Do you know what it means to envelope something or someone? It means to keep that thing or person. It means to preserve that thing. It means to protect that thing. It means to keep that thing. Now,I would like to tell you for free that God envelopes those who thank and praise him.

You can pray and miss but you cannot thank him and miss.

There is no spiritual force that is greater than the force of thanksgiving.

I see thanksgiving as a tool to employ in every situation.

He said let all the people praise thee,not some of the people, but all the people.

Someone sang this to him” I would enter his gates with thanksgiving in my heart, I would enter his courts with praise, I would say this is the day that the lord hath made, I would rejoice that he has made me glad”

HOW TO OFFER THANKSGIVING TO GOD By Dr.Enitiolorunda Abiola-Idris

1. Remember him- It’s not possible to give thanks to God without remembering him. We have to think and speak of him, bless him, love him, do his will.
2. Recognize his hand- To give thanksgiving to God, you must recognize his hand in your lives. You must recognize him as the source. What has he done for you? What blessings has he given you? What battles has he won for you? How long has he preserved your life? How long has he preserved that your health till this age? A great idea is to get a plain piece of paper and number your blessings one by one and then thank him.
3. Give thanksgiving in prayer- one of the ways most people give thanks to God is through prayer. You need to thank him for what he has done, what he is doing and what he is still going to do. He awaits our expressions of gratitude each morning and night in sincerity, simple prayer in our hearts for our security, good health, blessings, promotions, gifts and talents and of course deliverance, lastly favour.
Through our show of gratitude in prayers, we display our dependence on him for a higher source of wisdom and knowledge.
4. Keeping a gratitude journal- An outstanding way to display gratitude to God is by keeping a gratitude journal. A gratitude journal isn’t just a list of blessings he showered upon us nor a list of battles he won for us but indeed it is a way to keep track of what the lord has done for you on a daily basis. Picture your child keep a journal of all you do for him/her on a daily basis and then shows it to you at the end of the month while praising and thanking you. How would you feel? The following month won’t you do more for that child?
5. Repentance of sins- Repentance by itself is a great way for which we ought to bless God for. It is one of the greatest way of appreciating God. Please note that gratitude is the basement upon which repentance is built upon.
6. Obedience of commandments- When you obey his commandments, you work hand in glove with him. Obedience is a unique way of thanking the lord. It is not possible to be sincerely grateful to God without obeying him
7. Serving in his vineyard- This one puts a smile on the face of the Almighty God, that’s the whole essence of thanksgiving.
8. Have an attitude of gratitude- Having an attitude of gratitude keeps your path glowing and shinning. If you have this attitude, everything that concerns you must shine. As long as you keep showing gratitude to him, your path continues to shine.
9. Humility- Humility begets gratitude, while pride begets ingratitude. In the parable of the Pharisee and republican(Luke 18 9:14) Jesus taught us what happens to those who are lifted up in pride, those who are humble. He said “For every one that exalted himself shall be abased, he that humble himself shall be exalted. In the face of adversity, we must make a choice. We can react to our afflictions by becoming humble and thankful or we can become angry and bitter. Choosing humility over pride is an art of thanksgiving.
10. Make a new resolution- Another way of showing thanksgiving to God is to make a new resolution or goal. To say goodbye to a bad habit or character.
11. Gifts/Money/Dance/Song/Talent- This is a very common way of thanksgiving yet very powerful. Thanking God with your substance commands a mighty outpouring from heaven. When I say honouring God with your substance I necessarily do not mean your physical cash. It could be your dance step! May be a special hymn for the lord! Perhaps a well packed gift for the church e.g. a musical instrument or painting the church or a standing fan or an air conditioner. Buying and distribution of bibles or hymn books too is acceptable. Sponsoring evangelism or a go a fishing is just fine. Provision of transportation for ministers and members for a crusade is also a good way to show appreciation. Feeding the less privileged and ministers is also a way of showing appreciation to God. Decorating the altar of God is a power way to say Thank you Jesus! Using your body to work for him is a way of thanksgiving- You could help out in the cleaning of the church or assisting in the vineyard is definitely a way of saying Thank you.
Sponsoring some less privileged children’s education is a way of appreciating your maker. Giving to his ministers, the widow, orphans are ways to say I appreciate you God.
